Although the conference is mainly intended to deal with electromagnetic beams (vectorial scattering), papers dealing with acoustical and quantum beams (scalar waves) however presenting significant enough correlations with the main issues of the conference will be welcome.
Applications may range from multiphase flow characterization to aerosol science and atmospheric environment, biomedical optical engineering, remote manipulation of objects, plasma and soft matter physics, quantum electrodynamics in cavities, etc.
This conference series has been continually providing forums for promoting the interchange of new ideas on the development of advanced theories and model, as well as the latest experimental developments. Since nearly three decades this series, whose topics are continuously evolving, provides a source of state-of-the-art in light and shaped beam interactions with particle and particle systems.
The present edition follows the former Optical Particle Sizing (OPS) and Optical Particle Characterization (OPC) conferences held in Rouen 1987; Tempe, AZ, 1990; Yokohama, 1993; Nürnberg, 1995; Minneapolis, MN,1998; Brighton, 2001; Kyoto, 2004; Graz, 2007 as well as the reformulated LIP conference, held in Rouen, in 2012.
Over the years, selected papers from this conference series were published in books and special issues of highly ranked journals (Applied Optics, Particle & Particle Systems Characterization, Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy & Radiative Transfer).

"Surprises and anomalies in acoustical and optical scattering"
Experiments on radiation torques and negative radiation forces by various groups display how the underlying wave-field geometry influences radiation forces. Other situations strongly influenced by wave-field geometry include high-order caustics present in light scattering patterns of objects as simple as oblate drops of water or oblate bubbles of air in water. Related theoretical and experimental investigations are considered. Scattering enhancements associated with guided waves having negative group velocities are also examined.

"Electromagnetic scattering by dense discrete random media: physics and numerically exact results "
While it is recognized that the Maxwell equations (MEs) control the transport of electromagnetic energy in particulate media (clouds, particulate surfaces, particle suspensions), direct solutions of the MEs for such media had been impracticable until quite recently. This has led to the widespread use of the radiative transfer (RT) equation in situations when its very applicability is questionable. This situation has now changed owing to the development of efficient computer solvers of the MEs applicable to macroscopic multi-particle groups. In fact, a new branch of statistical optics emerged several years ago wherein the scattering of light (and other electromagnetic radiation) by particulate media is modeled directly by using numerically exact computer solutions of the MEs without invoking any assumptions underlying the RT theory.
This lecture is intended to summarize this profound recent development. We describe the application of the numerically exact superposition T-matrix method to extensive computations of electromagnetic scattering by 3D volumes filled with randomly distributed wavelength-sized particles. These computations are used to simulate and analyze the effect of randomness of particle positions as well as the onset and evolution of various multiple-scattering effects with increasing number of particles in a statistically homogeneous volume of discrete random medium. These exact results illustrate and substantiate the methodology underlying the approximate microphysical theories of RT and coherent backscattering and quantify the range of particle packing densities beyond which both theories break. We show that even in densely packed media, the light scattered along strings of widely separated particles still provides a significant contribution to the total scattered signal and thereby makes quite pronounced the classical RT and coherent backscattering effects. Numerical experiments with Gaussian laser beams provide a vivid demonstration of the robustness of the RT methodology.

"Numerical techniques for shaped beam scattering by large and absorbing particle using variable separation methods"
Shaped beam scattering and numerical computations are two very active domains of research in light interaction with particles. The shaped beams may invoke special effects when interacting with particles which are essence of many applications. The variable separation methods, typically the Generalized Lorenz-Mie theory, solve the problem rigorously, but the numerical evaluation of relevant physical quantities is always a challenge for practical applications. The talk will illustrate how to surmount these difficulties by combining physical, mathematical and algorithmic efforts. Sophisticated techniques will be presented to solve numerical problems arising in the calculation of the scattering and absorption properties, the internal and near fields, the radiation pressure and torque exerted on very large and strong absorbing particles illuminated by circular and elliptical Gaussian beams, Bessel and Doughnut beams. The talk will end with a short presentation of a software summarizing 20 years of research in this field. .

"Laser scattering in particle characterization: application perspective"
The talk will be focused on recent advancement in laser scattering instrumentation, the standardization of several scattering technologies, and the applications in various fields of particle characterization.

However, all these maps wil also be included in the conference bags. For your stay the best is probably to buy a ten travels card ("Carte 10 Voyages") at a subway station (electronic payment by credit card). The Organizing Committee has selected a variety of accommodation arround the Vieux-Port (Old-Harbor) of Marseille. If you select other accommodation, please keep in mind the distance from Vieux-Port since the latter will be our meeting point for social events. It is also very advisable to book hotels as soon as possible because the period of conference is the peak season in Marseille (and the price are already increasing!). The prices given below correspond to special rates found on www.booking.com (no breakfeast included).

Located on the southeast Mediterranean coast of France, Marseille is the capital of the state "Provence-Alps & French Riviera (PACA)" and
the second largest city in France, after Paris, with a population of 853,000. The urban area and metropolitan area of Marseille extends
beyond the city limits (and notably towards the old university town of "Aix-en-Provence", with a population of around 1.6 million [wiki].
Marseille is sometimes considered as the oldest city in France, as it was founded in 600 BC by Greeks from Phocaea as a trading port under the name "Massalia (or Massilia)". The city's main thoroughfare, the wide boulevard called the "Canebière, stretches eastward from the "Vieux Port" to the "Réformés" quarter. Two large forts flank the entrance to the "Vieux-Port" & "Fort Saint-Nicolas" on the south side and "Fort Saint-Jean" on the north. Further out in the Bay of Marseille is the "Frioul" archipelago which comprises four islands, of which, If, is the location of "Château d'If", made famous by the Alexandre Dumas novel "The Count of Monte Cristo". To the south west are the hills dominated by the famous basilica of "Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde".
Marseille has a Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and warm to hot, mostly dry summers. July and August are the hottest months, averaging temperatures of around 30 °C (86 °F) during the day and 19 °C (66 °F) at night.
If you want to swim..., the easiest way is via the "Corniche J.F. Kennedy" (cliff road). Take bus no. 83 starting from the "Vieux Port", direction "Rond Point du Prado". Depending on the traffic, after 15-30mn, hop off at the "Prado" beaches, near the reproduction of the "David" (statue) of Michelangelo. The metro line 2 to "Rond Point du Prado" and the bus no. 19 will also take you to "Escale Borély" and "la Pointe Rouge" for beaches bordered by bars and restaurants.Provence is a geographical region and historical province of southeastern France which extends from the left bank of the lower "Rhône" river on the west to the Italian border on the east, and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea on the south [wiki]. The Romans made the region into the first Roman province beyond the "Alps" and called it "Provincia Romana", which evolved into the present name.
In 1309, Pope Clement V, moved the Roman Catholic Papacy to Avignon (North of Provence). From 1309 until 1377, seven Popes reigned in Avignon before the Schism between the Roman and Avignon churches, which led to the creation of rival popes in both places. At that time the Palais des Papes was the largest gothic palace in Europe. In 1481, Provence became a province of the Kings of France. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many of the most famous painters in the world converged on Provence, drawn by the climate and the clarity of the light. The special quality of the light is partly a result of the "Mistral" wind, which removes dust from the atmosphere, greatly increasing visibility.
The "Garrigue" is the typical landscape of Provence; is a type of low, soft-leaved scrubland or chaparral found on limestone soils around the Mediterranean Basin. Most of Provence has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers, mild winters, little snow, and abundant sunshine. However there are micro-climates and local variations, and local variations, ranging from the Alpine climate inland from "Nice" to the continental climate in the northern "Vaucluse".
